U.S. Army History

In 1775 the first U.S. Army, the Continental Army, was formed by the Continental Congress as a unified army for the states to do battle with Great Britian. George Washington was appointed its first commander who used hit-and-run tactics to wear down the British and their allies. Finally, a victory at Yorktown defeated the British and, with the Treaty of Paris, the right of independence for the states was established. After the war the Continental Army was disbanded and state militias became the new nations sole army. It was soon realized that it was necessary for the new nation to have a standing army, and in 1791 the Legion of the United States was established.

In 1812 the last war between the British and Americans was fought, mainly with American defeats, but ended with a treaty. With settlers moving West the US Army engaged the American Indians and fought a short war with Mexoco which added Texas, California and New Mexico to the United States. In 1861 the most costly war for the United States was fought - the Civil War. This war was fought between the South (Confederates) and the North (Union Army) over slavery, and after a decisive victory at Gettysburg Union troops pushed into Confederate territory and won the war in April of 1865. Following this war the US Army fought the American Indians who resisted the US expansion into the center of the continent.

In 1917 the United States entered WWI and millions of US troops were sent to the front and helped break through the German lines and, with victory in 1918 once again saw its forces drawn down. In 1939 WWII began, but the United States did not enter the war until Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. US Army troops made up a large portion of the forces on the European front, while millions more participated in island hopping in the Pacific Theatre. Following the Axis surrenders in August/September 1945 US troops were deployed to Japan and Germany to occupy the two nations.

The Cold War followed from the late 1940's to the early 1990's while millions of US troops were deployed to Europe in anticipation of a Soviet attack which never came. During this time the US Army fought in the Korean War and the Viet Nam war, followed in the 1980's by a period of reorganization. The conscript army proved unable to handle the guerrilla war tactics of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. The army converted to an all-volunteer force with more emphasis on training and technology.

In 1991 Iraq invaded Kuwait and the Gulf War ensued, followed by a failed UN peacekeeping mission in Somalia in 1993, and sent troops to a NATO peacekeeping force to Yugoslavia in the middle of the decade. After the September 11th attack in 2001, and as a part of the Global War on Terror, US and NATO forces invaded Afghanistan. This was followed in 2003 by the US invasion of Iraq which defeated Sadam Hussein, and has resulted in the US being bogged down while trying to help shore up a fledgling democracy in Iraq. Today there is a lot of debate about what will happen with the US Army troops in Iraq.
